My Love Affair With The Landmine

Let’s face it, you have to have courage to turn a barbell into a Landmine at a public gym because quite frankly no-one really knows what they’re doing with it!

After diving deep online I realised most people just try to apply common lifting exercises to the landmine and so miss out on the unique aspects of the landmine that make it SO GOOD for developing Athleticism.

I’m not saying this to mock or shame anyone. The landmine was only ‘invented’ in 1999 (by hammer-thrower Bert Sorin) so like anything there is naturally going to be some time and exploration before the real value and potential starts to emerge. Well, thanks to David Weck’s teachings the Landmine just levelled up!

Why I love Landmine Training!

In short…

1) 3D STRENGTH TRAINING FOR A 3D BODY

Often Traditional Strength Training is very Linear and fixed – square shoulder, square hips. Landmine Training allows us to roam around freely using our spines full range with the see-saw of the shoulders and rotation of the ribs.

2) TIES IN ROPE FLOW TO LIFTING WEIGHTS

The weight shifting and coiling that the Infinity Pattern teaches us during Rope Flow can be used and applied to the Landmine.

3) RELATES TO LOCOMOTION

Used the right way it will you feel stronger on your feet.

4) ATHLETIC ANGLES

Because the barbell is fixed to the floor it gives you a grounded balance point that you can drive into at an angle that recruits the body as one system down the back chain from hands to the balls of the feet. Like static sled pushes.

5) FUN!

Because theres more movement involved and patterns and the whole body works together I enjoy every landmine session far more then I used to with normal lifting.

I just made a video demonstrating the Why and Hows of the Landmine which you can watch above.
